Easy calvings will increase the health in your calf pen and will give a kick-start to your newly fresh cows. Heavy calvings are highly correlated to higher calf mortality rates, the replacement of stillborn calves are a substantial cost on the dairy farm. Selecting for bulls with a below average Sire Calving Ease (SCE) will result in Easier Calvings, which will result in Healthier Calves:

  1. Stillbirth rate will be decreased
  2. Decrease of risks of respiratory disease
  3. Better start for your calf, resulting in faster growth rate
  4. Earlier fertility maturity of your young stock, decrease age of 1st calving
  5. Calves born without assistance will result in higher milk yielding animals

The Sire Calving Ease index is expressed in a percentage which indicates the percentage of birth difficulties on 1st calving heifers. Selecting on SCE has caused a significant improvement of calving difficulties over the past decades. The breed average percentage has been set at 8% again after the April ’20 indexrun, while the actual percentage of difficult calvings is a few percent under that. A lower percentage than the breed average of 8% means a lower percentage of calving difficulties than the breed average.
